Distribution of green turtle(Chelonia mydas) in the nearshore waters of Liuchiu Island / 琉球嶼沿海綠蠵龜族群分布範圍

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋生物研究所 / 106 / Liuqiu Island, which is commonly known as Xiaoliuqiu, is an islet with fast growing tourism by the virtue of its rich marine biodiversity. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is listed as endangered species in IUCN red list and CITES. They can be found in nearshore waters off Xiaoliuqiu as the island is one of the resident foraging habitats. To contribute for green turtle conservation, it is important first to understand its foraging and migratory movements, general behaviour, home range and habitat use. Distribution of green turtle is the most vital part in the study of habitat utilization. This study aims to investigate the distribution of green turtle in the nearshore waters of Liuqiu Island.
Snorkelling and underwater surveys were conducted during the summer from 2014 till 2016 for data collection. General information and position of the encountered green turtles in various regions were collected. Kernel Density Estimates (KDE) in Geographic Information System (GIS) was then used for analyzation of distribution and hotspots of the green turtles. There was a significant difference in the habitat utilization between juvenile and sub-adult as well as adult green turtles which were found at the region between ‘Beauty Hole’ and ‘Flower Vase Rock’. Depth and algae distribution are possible causes that resulted in the discrepancy. The result of this study can be used as reference for future conservation planning and management in Xiaoliuqiu and thus, contribute to the sea turtle conservation efforts in Taiwan.
