碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋環境與生態研究所 / 106 / Photosynthetic picoeukaryotes are important primary producers in the ocean. Recent studies have reported that picoeukaryote are primary producers and also bacterivores. Among them, Micromonas are common and abundant photosynthetic picoeukaryotes in the ocean, particularly in coastal ecosystem. There is still some doubt that phagotrophic ability of Micromonas due to their small cell size. In order to understand the phagotrophy between different clades in Micromonas by controlling environmental factors of light and nutrient availability. The results of the present study showed that Micromonas had a significantly lower ingestion rate under nutrient-replete condition (control) and significantly higher ingestion rates under the low nutrient and low light treatments. In addition, the ingestion rate on bacteria of Micromonas was measured in the coastal water of northeastern Taiwan. The ingestion rate of Micromonas ranged from 0.20 to 2.03 bacteria cell-1 h-1 and high ingestion rates were observed during summer. During that time, the nutrient levels were relatively low and light intensity was high. Our study therefore suggests that photosynthetic efficiency may be a crucial factor to trigger the phagotrophic mechanism in Micromonas.
