The Analysis of Global Iron Ore Market and the Transportation Model / 全球鐵礦砂市場及運輸模式之分析

The iron ore trades are mainly exported from Australia and Brazil in the world. In order to reduce transportation costs, the Vale company since 2008 has been ordering new types of VLOC vessels – called ‘Valemax’. The Vale company has established hub ports with large warehouses in Malaysia, Asia and Oman, Middle East. The company can ship iron ores to the hubports or floating transfer stations for storages by Valemax; then transship iron ores to port of entries by modern Capesize or Panamax vessels. The Vale company wants to reduce the transportation costs through a new mode of transportation and new-type larger iron ore vessels emits less pollution than modern capasize vessels to fit the development trend of global green shipping. In order to analyze the Valemax’s new-type supply chain transportation model of iron ores, this paper through literature review and do analyzes iron ore markets, compares the Valemax and modern Capesize, and then analyzes the new transportation model of iron ores. The results show as follows:
1. From the perspective of global iron ore transportation model, no matter the time cost or transportation efficiency, Vale’s new transportation model of iron ores is more competitiveness than the traditional point-to-point transportation model.
2. From the perspective of green shipping, Valemax vessel’s fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are lower than modern Capesize vessel because of the implementation of Valemax vessel’s newer engine,.
These findings will assist iron ore demand and importing sectors in making operational strategies, and government authorities in transportation policies.
