Container Terminal Planning and Automation Facilities -A Case Study in Taiwan / 貨櫃碼頭規劃與自動化設施-台灣案例研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 106 / Abstract
Taiwan is an island; exports and imports needs sea transport services. Maritime transport and related industries are also well developed. To cope with the mega-ships trend, big container terminals are subsequently constructed. To save cost and increase efficiency, automation equipment and operation are required and installed. This study investigates related issues of container terminal’s automation. The operational problems of the two automatic container terminals in Taiwan are empirically studied.

Through conducting an interview with experts in the industry, opinions are collected and analyzed. The results are concluded as the following points: (1) An automated terminal has basic advantages, but needs more coordination to improve efficiency; (2) Clients request higher service quality and more value-added services; (3) The difficulties for automated terminals include customs clearance limitation, high investment costs of the new equipment, professional employees training, and cargo claim issue; (4) To survive in the competition game, the must-do things are to enhance value-added services and create differentiation; (5) The challenges of automatic container terminals in South and North Taiwan have missions to help port development and build international linkage; and (6) Instead of pricing war, capacity expansion and competition for transshipment cargoes are two urgent tasks to be done for facing the tough competition coming from rivals of Mainland China
