Using scales and otolith to investigate age and growth of blackhead seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) in western waters of Taiwan / 利用耳石及鱗片探討臺灣西部海域黑棘鯛年齡成長

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 106 / In Taiwan´s surrounding waters, blackhead seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) lives very close to regions of high human activity, and even though it's a well-known resource but also vulnerable to anthropogenic influences. Furthermore, Blackhead seabream is targeted by set net fishing and recreational fishery (shore fishing). The government therefore selected blackhead seabream as an important stock enhancement species, as a result, it’s stock assessment is necessary. However, as a common commercial fishery species in the coastal water, research about age and growth has not been established so far. The purpose of this study is to do age determination for blackhead seabream using otolith and scale with emphasize on the later which is more convenient and lower cost. We also compare the differences in the growth parameter between west (Miaoli) and the southwest (Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Chiayi) and gender. There were 1496 specimens collected in this study between January 2016 and December 2017. The sample number of otolith aged was 273, and the scale sample was 146. The estimated VBGE by otolith reading is (Female : Lt=41.42(1-e^(-0.289(t+0.858) ) ); Male : Lt=42.06(1-e^(-0.180(t+1.832) )), and there is no significant difference in the VBGE curves between scales and otoliths (P > 0.05). However, the scale selected for age determination has to be primordial scale instead of regenerated one. There is no significant difference in the VBGE curve between the two regions (P > 0.05). Meanwhile, there was significant difference in the VBGE curve between genders (P < 0.05). Finally, we compared the growth rate determined by otoliths, discussed the possible alternative usage of scale, and evaluated the efficiency and precision for scale ageing.
