碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 106 / Stable oxygen and carbon isotopic values recorded in calcium carbonate structure are used to reconstruct thermal and metabolic histories in marine animals, and however, it is understudied on cephalopods calcium carbonate structures, such as statolith and cuttlebone, and the validation is still lacking. Therefore, we reared hatchlings of pharaoh cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis, under a temperature controlled environment at 20, 25 and 30℃ for one month and analysed δ18O and δ13C values in statolith, cuttlebone, water and food. Cuttlefish living at 25℃ had a higher survivorship (97.70%) and growth rate (0.16 mm/day), whereas the individuals living at 30℃ had a lower survivorship (44.00%) and growth rate (0.09 mm/day), showing that temperature had strong effect on the survivprship and the growth of cuttlefish. δ13C values in both cuttlebone and statolith were negatively related to water temperature and varied among three groups. We suggest that dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in seawater and diet were not the vital factors related to the difference of δ13C values among three temperature. The metabolic rate of individuals positively correlated to water temperature, and negatively correlated to δ13C values in carbonate structure, indicating water temperature indirectly affected δ13C values in carbonate structure. Similarly, water temperature showed a negatively effect on δ18O values in both carbonate tissues, and the δ18O values also varied among three groups, but statolith δ18O values were relatively lower than cuttlebone about 1.14‰. We also compared several studies with each other, finding that the fractionation regression varied among different species, showing the importance of establishing the species-specific relationship of seawater temperature and δ18O values in carbonate structure.
