The Production Report of Feature FilmEternal Love / 電影《海角有個五店市》創作理念與製作說明

碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 電影學系 / 106 / “Eternal Love” is filmed to serve the purpose of preserving and promoting traditional Minnan culture in Jinjiang. The main story takes place in Wutianshi, which is located in the traditional Minnan section in Jinjiang, Quanzhou County, Fujian Province, China. This so-called garden city is one of China’s main manufacturing locations for shoes and jackets, and is marked as an open tourism site in 2015. Ever since then, it has become the top choice when visiting Jinjiang. Literally, Wutianshi means “Wutian market”. The streets of Qingyang district, Jinjiang, have been called by this name since the Kaiyuan Period of Tang Dynasty. In the script writing process, we focus on the features of Minnan culture and the sentimentality of illustrating “a completely different childhood hometown when returning as an old man”, which is narrated through the memories of characters fleeing from war.

In terms of settings and locations, the kiln of the Zhuang family is one of the featured tourist attractions in Wutianshi. We use a porcelain plate as a device to connect different parts of the story. It is a time of war when the bonding between people is the strongest, especially those who have left their roots. Travelers always hold an everlasting yearning and affection to the families they leave behind and the ones they love once so dearly. We particularly emphasize the preservation of historic monuments and artifacts during production. The team decide on adopting a nail-less production design workflow to ensure that none of cultural values to be harmed during the filming process.

The filming crew consists of filmmakers from all over China, while the director, screenwriter and first assistant director are from Taiwan. The most valuable experience we have acquired from the project is that no matter where the crew comes from or what beautiful landscape the camera is pointed at, the most touching stories come from people, and the best sceneries are made by the people around us. The post production for video and audio are finished in Taiwan after consorting with our crew and investors from Mainland China to minimize gaps in communication

In the aftermath of completion, the film is screened in areas such as Fujian in April, 2017. It is also provided for streaming on the Internet platforms such as Iqiyi and QQlive. We have also collaborated with local schools and army units for the film to be played on their public screening platforms. In recent years, the film and television industry in Mainland China has been going through a rapid growth. It has reached a gross output value of fifty billion in RMB by November, 2017. The collaboration across the Strait is one of the ways the Taiwanese film industry can make it into the Mainland China market. The current advantages of Taiwanese film include delicacy in content, integrality in story structure, and exquisite description of details. Through conflicts, clashes, and sentiments between people, the story is given layers and flavors. That is what Taiwanese films are good at, and that is the main strength.
