Modeling investigation of heavy metal transport in the Danshui River estuarine system / 淡水河系重金屬傳輸模式之模擬研究

碩士 / 國立聯合大學 / 土木與防災工程學系碩士班 / 106 / Danshui River is often densely populated owing to the abundant ecological and water resources in the tidal reaches and estuaries, resulting in advanced civilizations. However, the wastewater discharged by factories and households has led to serious water pollution due to the vast development of the area. This poses a threat to not only the physical and mental health of the local residents but also to the ecological environment. This study aims to simulate the transport of heavy metals manganese and copper in the Danshui River using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model SELFE coupled with suspended sediment and heavy metal transport model. After verifying and validating the proposed model, it was used to investigate the effects of different flow conditions on the distribution of heavy metals manganese and copper in water. It was also used to investigate the change in the concentration of heavy metals manganese and copper in water under the condition, where no salt and suspended sediment are present.
In terms of the calibration and validation of the water management model, the calibration and validation of the water level, current, and salinity level were compared with that of the measured data for the year 2010, 2011, and 2015. The results show that the skill index values are between 0.20 (poor) and 0.99 (excellent), which shows a general consistency between the measured data and data obtained from the model simulation. The verification and validation results of the suspended sediment model show that the skill index values are between 0.51 (very good) and 0.98 (excellent). The verification and validation results of heavy metals manganese and copper transport mode show that the skill index values are between 0.70 (excellent) and 0.97 (excellent), indicating that the model simulation data are consistent with the measured data.
Following the calibration and validation process, the model was applied to investigate the concentration distribution of heavy metals manganese and copper in the Danshui River under the condition of a low- (Q75) and high-flow rate (Q10). The results show that the transport and migration of heavy metals in the upstream of Danshui River is heavily influenced by the flow rate. The investigation of the effects with and without salt on the distribution of heavy metals manganese and copper concentrations finds that the estuarine density and baroclinic effects have a slight to moderate effect on the concentration distribution of heavy metals. The model was also applied to examine the effects of suspended and non-suspended sediments on the distribution of heavy metals manganese and copper concentrations. The results show that the suspended sediment concentration has a significant impact on the spatial distribution of heavy metals manganese and copper, i.e., when simulating the transportation and distribution of heavy metals in estuaries, the transport and migration of suspended sediment must be considered as well.
