Perceptions and Eroticism :A Study of “The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai” / 感官與情慾——《海上花列傳》研究

碩士 / 東海大學 / 中國文學系 / 106 / No one doubts that The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai (《海上花列传》)is one of the best novels of Brothel Literature in the Late Qing Dynasty. It started to got a large amount of admiration from the time of“May Fourth Movement”. When time went to 21st century , the trend of“Indigenous Modernity”thoughts and “zhang Ai-ling” study made the novel a hot study issue again. But if we contributed too much on the topic of “Indigenous Modernity” rather than understand and perceive the real text? As a matter of fact, great part of the novel is the perceiving experiences of characters, such like looking, listening, opium-taking and so on. Readers immerse themselves in the world of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai because of the perception-writing. This thesis is just about the writer Han Bangqing’s(韓邦慶) creative notion of the perception-writing and eroticism-writing in the novel , and things behind it. Starts with the name of the novel and based on the previous study, the particularity and typicalness of the novel are proved from three aspects —— haishang(海上)place-experience, hua(花) Brothel Literature tradition, liezhuan(列傳)structure. Audition study of literature is always a blind spot compared to vision study, but thanks to the modern narratology conception “intelligent ear”, the importance of audition-writing is found in the novel. What’s more, the link between opium-writing and eroticism, which is very significant to the phenomenon of anti- eroticism of this novel. At last, the question of “why diseases and insanity are used often to tell love stories” is solved .
