碩士 / 國立臺北藝術大學 / 電影創作學系碩士班 / 106 / With half of the world’s commerical shipping passing through, the South China Sea is one of the main arteries of global trade. The seabed holds substantial oil and natural gas resources and its waters are rich fishing grounds that support hundreds of millions of people in the region with food and employment. Rival countries have lay competing claims to these hotly contested waters - with China claiming the largest portion of territory and aggressively backing it up with military build-up. The constructions of artificial reefs to the deployment of aircraft carriers have garnered widespread attention – but an aspect often overlooked is the development of a comprehensive nuclear program in these waters.
Unfazed by the Fukushima Daiichi Accident, Chinese reactor construction has accelerated as the country seeks to meet its energy and military needs. New plants continue to line its densely populated east coast and offshore nuclear reactors and nuclear-powered attack submarines are commissioned and deployed. The risks and dangers that arise from this large-scale development are immense and its consequences multi-generational – yet these concerns are left unaddressed with the sovereign claims of various Asian nations taking centre-stage.
Drawing from actual events, Luzon is a satirical look at the pugnacious and childish nature of territorial jockeying and how laughably meaningless it is in the face of a nuclear scenario. Set entirely at sea, the short film was completed with limited resources by a skeleton crew and shot on location at sea. This thesis report humbly offers an insight to the filmmaking process – from the film’s inception, the challenges the team undertook and a review of our experiences working on location with live-action production and CGI.
