碩士 / 國立雲林科技大學 / 工業工程與管理系 / 106 / This study explores the cause-effect relationship in the industry of liner shipping containership regarding the balance between the demand and supply in Far-East to Europe shipping market. The competitive behavior of two different carriers in the free market is simulated by developing system dynamics models. There are four models examined, namely, a carrier's supply and demand system, a dual-competition system with two homogeneous carriers, a dual-competition system with the loss of supply shortage, and a strategic alliance system. This study simulates real business behavior by system dynamics and aims to understand the impacts of shipping prices and capacity changes on the carrier's profitability in different systems. The results show that the price reduction strategy increases the market share, and however, it reduces the profit of both parties. The long-term oversupply environment and lower freight rate cause the carrier to continuously reduce its capacity. In the strategic alliance model, the exchange capacity between two carriers can effectively reduce the total investment and total supply, then improving the profitability of the carriers.
