The Study of Minnan Taiwanese Folk Culture of the Lunar New Year on Poster Design / 台灣閩南過年習俗文化之海報創作研究

碩士 / 國立雲林科技大學 / 視覺傳達設計系 / 106 / The Lunar New Year is the most important festival for people in Taiwan. The festival activities are held according to the differences of the ethnic group and belief. With the gratitude and praying heart, the people tend to embody the Taiwanese religious viewpoint by their splendid performance. Though unable to include all the indigenous ethnic groups living in Taiwan, this study covers most of Minnan Taiwanese people’s living habits. The purpose of the study is to explore the cultural progression of the Lunar New Year from Zhangquan in Fujian of China in Ming and Qing dynasties. However, under the social changes and foreign cultures, the Lunar New Year culture has been gradually formed in Taiwan.
In the past studies, the method of literature review discovers the differences of customs and cultures underlying the Lunar New Year of the Minnan Taiwanese people. The expert interview was made to establish the cultural content and connotation about the Minnan Taiwanese people’s Lunar New Year. Through the comparison of the literature and the results of the interview with Mr. Mao-hsien Lin, the famous Taiwanese expert of folk custom, the study discovers that the cultural derivative factors of the Minnan Taiwanese people’s Lunar New Year include: (1) life circle: in early agricultural society, the peasants were capable of taking a rest and getting together with the family after the harvest; and (2) religious activities: folk activities encompass the Minnan Taiwanese people’s respect and gratitude toward gods and ancestors, including the pray for them about the harvest of the coming year, the safe and sound life, and the wealth. The folk custom serves as the expression of culture, and culture replies on the accumulation of daily activities. The Taiwanese diversity of the folk culture of the Lunar New Year is represented by the differences of the geographical environment, agricultural season, religious belief, lifestyle, and social pattern, which leads to the cultural exchange and impacts among the ethnic groups, as the people migrates to Taiwan from Fujian. This demonstrates the cultural exchange and communication among the different ethnic groups in more than one hundred years ago in Taiwan.
The above theoretical foundation of the two cultural derivative factors would be further stretched to the four themes about the poster design of the Lunar New Year folk culture: a) story of “words and past”; b) worship of “praying and good luck”; c) life of “passing a good year”; and d) food of “safe eating.” From today’s social viewpoint and cognition, the study attempts to interpret the cultural content and connotation of the Minnan Taiwanese people’s Lunar New Year.
