People living on boat: The Illustration Design
of Fishmen in Aberdeen / 水上人家-早期香港仔漁民生活之插畫創作

碩士 / 國立雲林科技大學 / 視覺傳達設計系 / 106 / For those people who are not familiar with the history towards the early development of Hong Kong, the common impression of Hong Kong may be a shopping paradise, a financial centre with skyscrapers. In fact, Hong Kong is a place with inadequate land for farming. However, there are brilliant harbors located at superior geographical location. During the early colonial days, most of Hong Kong people lived on boats and relied on fishing for supporting their lives. Moving into a new era, the numbers of practitioners in fishing industry dropped sharply and led to slump. In order to sustain development of the fishing industry, the Hong Kong government puts efforts on helping fishermen and invests more for promoting fishing port culture in recent years.
In this design, there are researches on fishermen living in Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters in early days. The design objectives are as follow: (1) To explore Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters and lifestyle of fishermen lived there by the means of literature review and field research for information gathering; (2) To understand more on custom, living environment, food culture and characteristics of the fishing industry by conducting expert interview as an supplementary to the literature review and field research findings in objective one; (3) In order to let the public know more about the historical culture of people living on boats, to let them learn more about Hong Kong in different perspectives and to make records for people living on boats, poster design will be made for presenting lifestyle of those fishermen. All of the information gathered as stated above will be used for design accordingly. The lives of fishermen living on boats at Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters in early days will be grouped into three topics such as lifestyle, work and custom etc. for poster creations.
