碩士 / 國立中正大學 / 成人及繼續教育學系碩士在職專班 / 107 / The topic of this research is visually impaired adults' pursuit of ocean kayaking adventures, citing the case of "Mariner of Darkness," which was organized by the Jonathon Su Foundation of Hua Lien in 2017 and 2018. It applies the human development psychologist Baltes' model of Selection, Optimization, and Compensation (SOC) as verification of the research. The spirit of "Mariner of Darkness" is the epitome of the SOC method. The entire process of the activity employed the method of Selection, Optimization, and Compensation: selecting appropriate outdoor recreational activities, assisted by professional instruction and alternative compensatory methods, and providing appropriate equipment and facilities in a safe training environment. This allowed the visually impaired to succeed in rowing and accomplish their maritime adventure.
This research delves into the subject of five visually impaired adults who participated in the "Mariner of Darkness" on both occasions. Due to the limitations imposed by their physiological impairment, participation in recreational activities has significant restrictions. However, by employing the model of selection, optimization, and compensation, the senses of hearing, touch, smell, and taste were effectively enhanced, thereby elevating the participants' skills to a level which enables them to participate in adventurous outdoor activities.
Within the scope of adult education research, applying Baltes' SOC model can assist the elderly to develop gracefully with age. However, due to its inherent qualities, an even greater portion of the populace could feasibly benefit from incorporation of the SOC model. Those who have physical or mental impediments could benefit from selection of the mission to achieve, compensation strategy of combining all possible resources, and optimization to achieve their objective.
