Japan’s national defense policy and military industry in Formosa during the colonial period – The development of 61st Naval Assembly Plant and the 6th Naval Refinery Plant / 日治後期臺灣的國防與軍需產業—以第六十一海軍航空廠及第六海軍燃料廠為例

博士 / 國立成功大學 / 歷史學系 / 107 / In the year of 1928, the output value of industry had exceeded all other departments within Takao Prefecture. This had made Takao the miniature of an industrial city at the time. Then in the middle of the 1930s, the Japanese Government abolished the Washington as well as the London Naval Treaties to begin arm races against the United States and Great Britain. The Japanese Empire must move south to gain the resources of Southeast Asia. Formosa became very important because of its strategic position. Because Formosa became an important advanced base for the Empire, more and more aviation facilities in were being constructed by the Japanese army and navy in the island.

They built airports, aircraft assembly plant, harbor and oil refinery. These war facilities were numerous and sophisticated. It is important to notice that the 61st Naval Aviation Plant located in Okayama and the 6th Refinery Plant in Takao had transformed the entire prefecture from an agricultural field into a modern military industrial zone. While Formosans were forced to participate in the Pacific War, the military industry modernized Southern Formosa in a short period of times. Many skillful workers educated by the Japanese during the war became critical manpower for post-war Taiwan. This study will discuss how significant those aviation facilities had played in the history of Kaohsiung.
