碩士 / 國立東華大學 / 自然資源與環境學系 / 107 / The ocean is an important place to get food for human beings. With the rapid development of science and technology after the Industrial Revolution, human activities, such as pollution and overfishing, have resulted in the depletion of marine resources nowadays. Therefore, human beings must change their behavior and attitude towards the ocean and work together to solve current marine problems. Promoting environmental education on sustainable seafood and teaching the college students about the conservation of marine ecology in order to change thoughts and behaviors of human beings. Let the people know the choice of seafood in every meal could affect marine ecology.
This thesis explored the current of college students’ alternative conceptions about marine conservation and sustainable seafood, and the study subjects were the students of the National Dong Hwa University. Based on the conception of Seafood Guide and Slow Food, there were five conceptual dimensions categorized, including ‘resources’, ‘fishing gears and methods’, ‘place of production’, ‘ingredients’ and ‘fairness’. The study method was semi-structured interview and the two-tier diagnostic test which followed the step by Treagust’ s designed in 1988. To explore the knowledge source and alternative conceptions about marine conservation and sustainable seafood from college students by developing and using the diagnostic test. Ten background factors affecting the conceptions of marine conservation and sustainable seafood in college students were analyzed, including college, gender, grade, race, registered residence, diet, knowledge source, experience of conservation activity, parental education and occupation.
The main results are summarized as following:
1. The main knowledge sources of the marine conservation and sustainable seafood conceptions from students in the National Dong Hwa University are the internet and television.
2. In addition to the knowledge source, there were nine background factors which might affect the college students to learn the conceptions about marine conservation and sustainable seafood. The results of the analysis on the overall conception and its five dimensions indicated that students from the College of Environmental Studies performed better than students from other Colleges, female students performed better than male students, non-indigenous students performed better than indigenous students, and domestic students performed better than foreign students. By contrast, the other four background factors, including grade, diet, and parental education and occupation, have no significant effect on the overall conception and its five dimensions.
3. The students’ performances were above average on the conception of the marine conservation and sustainable seafood. They performed well on the conceptual dimensions of ‘resource’ and ‘fishing gears and methods’. However, the conceptual dimensions of ‘fairness’ performed poorly, especially for the sub-conception of fishery subsidies.
