Kitchen Water-Saving Product Design - with Rice Washer as an Example / 廚房節水產品設計-以洗米器設計為例

碩士 / 國立高雄科技大學 / 創新設計工程系 / 107 / In recent years, the global climate changes, natural disasters happen frequently everywhere, rainfall patterns have thereby also changed. The lack of water resources is an urgent issue. Water-saving has gradually become a topic of attention. Water-saving product design and supporting measures have been booming. However, there are relatively few rice washer products with a water-saving function. Therefore, this study hopes to design a rice washer, which is innovative, water-saving, user-friendly, and with water-saving as a goal.
This study takes a qualitative research approach to investigate problems encountered by users during rice washing, in order to understand the user requirements. This approach first performs a product analysis to understand the advantages and disadvantages of rice washing products. Then, with interviews and observation methods, user’s ideas and needs are collected. Grounded theory is then applied for data analysis and summary. Water saving experiments are conducted to verify the most water-saving container shape. Finally, the results obtained are consolidated as the design guidelines. According to the elements mentioned in the design guidelines, model sketches are drawn. A discussion with experts is conducted to seek design recommendations. Then,
with computer-assisted 3D drawings, three product styles are provided for testers to select. The selected result will be made into a product model.
Through observations and interviews, this research found that users mainly concern about the practicality of rice washers. Water-saving is not consumers’ primary focus at product purchase. Therefore, only by letting users experience the product features and rewards may arouse consumers interests. The water-saving experiment result shows that, a “cylinder shaped container” is the most water-saving shape in the choice of container. So, our rice washer product’s outlook and shape is developed based on this. In terms of commercialization, we aim at mass production. So, we investigate parts manufacturing method, material selection, assembly method, and surface treatment, etc.. From the use of the product model and test results, it is found that the lid of the rice washer has to be tight. This also affects the ease of lid-covering. Therefore, in subsequent studies we may focus on this problem for further improvement.

Additionally, the discovery from the users feedback found that the design of the rice washer can be extended to other beans (like red bean, mung bean, black bean and soybean etc..). This reflects its breadth of this research product
