The Research of Black Tea Industry and Tourism Clustering in Yuchih Township, Nantou County / 南投縣魚池鄉紅茶產業與旅遊群聚之研究

Apart from the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area, black tea industry is a critically important local industry in Yuchih Township, Nantou. After the 921 earthquake, local government and tea farmers have put a lot of effort into revitalizing black industry which nowadays becomes a new tourist area.

This study explores the black tea industry clustering patterns by field observation and in-depth interviews, and then used GIS butter analysis and point density analysis to realize the linkage between black tea industry and tourism development.

The findings of this research are as follow: (1) Yuchih is Taiwan’s main place for cultivations of Assam tea, which was brought in from India during the period of Japanese occupation. The black tea industry has been rising and flourishing since then. (2) New tourism clusters in Yuchih are related to the black tea industry. (3) Black tea industry had been successfully transformed from traditional agriculture to leisure agriculture. Thanks to the attraction of the Sun Moon Lake, the black tea industry clusters have become a new tourist attraction.

Based on the findings of this research, the author’s suggestions for the tourism cluster of black tea industry are listed below: (1) Government sector should make whole and integrated marketing on the black tea industry. (2) Traditional tea factories are suggested to reform into sightseeing tea factories to promote black tea culture. (3) black tea-related spots should be integrated to offer tourists multifunctional recreation.
