碩士 / 國立臺中教育大學 / 體育學系碩士在職專班 / 107 / The study aims to analyze the factors at play in the migration of those excellent Taiwanese basketball players to the US for studying, exploring how push and pull factors, intervening obstacles and personal factors affect them, and further analyze their labor migration type. The subjects are the newly graduates from Taipei Municipal Jinhua Junior High School basketball team. Research data is mainly collected by in-depth interviews with coaches, students and parents. The findings of the study are as follows: the push factors are bad academic performances commonly seen among HBL players, the recommendations and assistances from the coaches, enterprises as well as the coaches overseas, and successful migration experiences, all of which motivate the players to migrate for studying in the US. The pull factors are higher level of basketball skills in the US, and the players’ ambitions to challenge themselves to train and play basketball in their dream land. Yet, the main pull factor lies in the likelihood of striking a balance between training and academic performances while they study there. The environment is also beneficial to learning languages and building up a different global view. The players are even more willing to study there because of the scholarships offered by American high schools. The intervening obstacles are problems with language abilities, their level of basketball skills, relationships, living expenses, etc. The personal factors that make them want to migrate are the plans to go to colleges in the US and even preparing for NCAA, receiving training there for longer professional career, following the footsteps of their acquaintances, or just making a different choice instead of staying in Taiwan. These basketball players who study in the US match the migration type of ambitionist.
