Light Limitation on Phytoplankton Growth of Reservoirs in Taiwan / 台灣水庫浮游藻生長的光限制

碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 生態暨環境資源學系環境生態碩士班 / 107 / Nutrients and light are the most important factors for algal growth. However, previous studies in Taiwan have primarily focused on studying nutrient limitation. In order to understand light limitation of algal growth in reservoirs of Taiwan, this study used a previously published method to study the relative importance of light and nutrient limitation of reservoirs in Taiwan, to provide reference for eutrophication further information for the management of eutrophication in these reservoirs.
Data from nine reservoirs with various degree of eutrophication were used for this analysis. The data period spanned a period of 13 years from 2000 t0 2012. Results show that 1 reservoir was completely nutrient limitation, 1 other reservoir was completely light limitation, yet another 1 reservoir was co-limitation. The remaining reservoirs were found to be alternately nutrient or light limitation at different periods.
Techi reservoir, with the lowest degree of eutrophication, had only one occurrence of light limitation during the investigation, and the remaining period was nutrient-limited. Fongshan reservoir, with very high nutrient concentration, was complete light-limited.
It was also found that phytoplankton growth in the water of most reservoirs switched between nutrient and light limitation. As mixing depth and light intensity change seasonally, the available light resource to phytoplankton also change. Therefore light limitation can occur in oligotrophic reservoirs, and nutrient limitation can also develop in eutrophic reservoirs. The studied reservoirs showed seasonal change of alternating light and nutrient limitation.
