碩士 / 國立臺南大學 / 文化與自然資源學系臺灣文化碩士在職專班 / 107 / The term "Cieding" first appeared in 1603 of Ming Dynasty (Ming Shen Zong Wan Li). Chen Di and Shen You-rong went to Dongfan (Taiwan) to suppress the Japanese pirates. In the record of history, it is documented to be sure that “Cieding” area has been known in the early seventeenth century.

"Cieding", a fishing village, also a closed traditional tribe, the ancestors were mostly hardworking on making a living on the sea. However, the risk of sea is too huge for the ancestors to predict. Due to the non-controlled ability of forecasting the amount of fish catch and the uncertainly of life and death on the sea, it is inevitable for people to generate mental anxiety and naturally rely on the spiritual dependence on the power of gods. Consequently, a variety of ceremonial activities have been derived from the praying for peace and blessing on the rich catch. For this reason, religious beliefs have a considerable influence in the social lives of Cieding fishing village.

In the observation of Cieding District, it is discovered that fishing industry is highly relevant to the worship of Wang Ye, and all the gods are added the word “Beihai”. On the meaning of “Beihai”, five aspects are demonstrated in this paper. With deep interviews and researches, a distribution of six places of Cieding District are widely discussed.
Cieding District is a multi-god, multi-temple, multi-ceremony hometown. It owns a good reputation of Taoist Family, Squid Sign Poetry, Bài hǎi qián Custom, and Wang Ye Worship Ceremony. It is said the Beihai Wang Ye shows his spiritual power, along the Taiwan Strait, to give divine blessing on the abundant fish industry and to support the people in whole Cieding area. A rich and diverse Beihai Wang Ye Faith is therefore brought up in Cieding District.

Based on the past historical track of “Beihai”, and the field investigation by interviewing Wang Ye believers, further description of descending altar by Wang Ye, a “Beihai Wang Ye Venation System” is particularly built in Cieding District. Due to this research, it not only enhances a broader orientation of Wang Ye Faith in Taiwan, but also provides more logical thinking in post-up research material.
