Economic Analysis of Meretrix lusoria Farming of Taiwan / 臺灣文蛤養殖產業經濟分析

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 107 / This study aimed to explore the impact of culture environment and management methods on the growth and profitability performance of the common orient clam Meretrix lusoria culture in Taiwan. The culture area and stocking density were used as affecting factors, and the four main culture areas included Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan. The biological and economic data of each farmer in the production process were collected and the key factors affecting the profitability of Meretrix lusoria culture were clarified by using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), discriminant function, canonical correlation and Cobb-Douglas function analyses.
This study showed that the total input cost per unit area of Meretrix lusoria farming is about NT 400 thousand dolor, of which the highest proportion is the cost of seedlings and personnel costs. The ratio of income to locality is 0.97 for Changhua, 0.67 for Yunlin, 0.95 for Chiayi and 1.40 for Tainan. The performance of low-density culture of Meretrix lusoria in Tainan was the most advantageous among other categories in terms of biomass, cost input and profitability indicators. The seedlings with larger size were selected to shorten the stocking cycle, and the low-density farming strategy was adopted to increase the growth and survival rate of the clam with further aim of improving revenues. The excessive stocking densities, however, in other areas resulted in poor survival rates of Meretrix lusoria, which are suggested to appropriately reduce the stocking density to improve the survival of the clams.
According to the results of canonical correlation analysis, the increase in the survival rate of the biological variable group could reduce the total cost of the economic variable group and therefore increased the total income. therefore, increasing stocking sizes and reducing stocking density are considered as potential measures to improve survival rates of the clams.
The results of the Cobb-Douglas function analysis showed that only the cultured clam industry in Tainan had economies of scale and the factors affecting the total production differed among areas. Therefore, increasing capital investment in areas other than Tainan is not recommended, but improving management techniques is still necessary to be implemented in all areas for increasing production of Meretrix lusoria in Taiwan.
