The relative humidity of indoor air is a crucial factor in the quality of human life. If the indoor relative humidity is too high or too low, it will affect people's health and even building’s structure. In this study, the moisture buffering capability of the passive moisture buffering material, diatomaceous earth, was investigated.
The equilibrium moisture content test and the moisture buffering value test were carried out for the diatomaceous earth to understand its basic humidity control capability. In addition, the temperature and humidity changes in a space, where the walls of it were coated by the diatomaceous earth, were monitored. Also, the numerical software EnergyPlus was used to simulate the environment protected by the diatomaceous earth.
The results showed that diatomaceous earth is a good moisture buffering material, which can effectively control the change of temperature and humidity.
