Applicability assessment of global standard algorithm of marine primary production in the seas surrounding Taiwan / 臺灣四周海域基礎生產力模式的適用性評估

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋環境與生態研究所 / 107 / Marine primary production is the efficiency of fixing inorganic carbon to organic carbon through photosynthesis by phytoplankton. It is a considerable foundation supporting the marine food web. It also plays an important role in the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, it is difficult to obtain the long-term data and the data of large area due to the limitations of the experimental method. Though there is an opportunity to calculate total primary productivity in the euphotic zone (IP) by using ocean color data from satellite and the Vertical General Production Model (VGPM), whether it is applicable to regional seas is still doubtful. As a consequence, this study evaluates the applicability of VGPM in the seas surrounding Taiwan by observing the seasonal data in 2018 which are the parameters in VGPM. We co-worked with the Fisheries Research Institute and, observing the seasonal changes in the seas surrounding Taiwan by using research vessels, Fisheries Researcher I and Fisheries Researcher II. The measured seasonal IP in 2018, was between 25~662, 113~456, 124~832, 249~1898 mgC m-2 d-1 in winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. After evaluating the parameters of the VGPM, the following conclusions are obtained. (1) The empirical formula of VGPM is feasible if we use the measurement data as the parameters, but the results are slightly overestimated. (2) We analyzed the models of euphotic zone depth (Ze) which calculated by chlorophyll concentrations in the surface water (CS), and the optimal carbon fixation rate in the euphotic zone (P_opt^B) which calculated by sea surface temperature (SST). Both of them are the parameters of VGPM. We found the correlation between VGPM and measured IP is very low, and the results are seriously overestimated. (3) This research shows that the IP from satellite ocean color data and VGPM model are not applicable in the seas surrounding Taiwan.
