碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 107 / The purpose of this thesis aims to investigate the factors resulting in Work-Family Conflict(WFC) and Family-Work Conflict(FWC) for seafarers in Taiwan. Questionnaires are distributed to seafarers who are members of the National Chinese Seamen’s Union with Taiwnese valid seamanbooks. Printed questionnaires and online questionnaire surveys are implemented at the same time. There are 107 copies of valid responses. The IPA model and binary logistic regression technique are employed to analyze the data collected from the survey.
Survey results analyzed by IPA model indicate following factors required stakeholders to input more resources to effectively reduce the seafarers’ WFC: insecure fixed term seafarer’s contract with ocean carriers, complaints from family mebers for the seafarers’ inability to participate family events, inability to participate in family events, inability to take care of family members, generation gaps occurred due to seafarers’ inability to take care of family members during seafarers’ onboard duration.
Possible factors resulting in the seafarers’ FWC analyzed by IPA model are summarized as below: Worrying about family members during seafarers’ seagoing period, stress resulting from famiy members, inability to accompany family members when they are sick, spouse’s complaint for short shore leave duration, inability to accompany during their growth period, and family members’ heavy spending.
Binary logistic regression technique is employed to find out factors resulting in seafarers’ WFC and FWC in Taiwan. Family members’ complaint about seafarers’ inability to participate in family events and lengthy sevice duration for each contract are found to be two major significant factors contribute to WFC of seafarers. While pressure from family members to seafarers and family members’ request to seafarers work ashore are the two factors significantly contribute to the seafarers’ FWC in Taiwan.
