A Study on the Willingness to Study at University for MaritimeVocational Senior High School Students / 海勤高職生升學意願之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 商船學系 / 107 / Abstract
The growing trend of enterprise globalization caused Taiwan to rely more on the prospering maritime transport economy. The enormous economic benefits generated by the shipping industry are critical to the quickening pace of Taiwan's economic development and globalizing competition. Shipping merchants became much more wary of operational costs, which strained the employment opportunities of the students from navigational and marine engineering departments. Increased hiring of foreign nationals as crew members brought forth further impact. As living standards of Taiwanese nationals increased, and the country is hit by sub-replacement fertility, the desire of students to pursue a maritime career through navigational and maritime engineering departments become a critical issue discussed in this paper.
Following a review of literature available, this research adopted the Social Cognitive Career Theory as the theoretical basis for study and targeted students from National Keelung Maritime Vocational High School and the National Penghu Marine & Fishery Vocational High School for questionnaire survey and data collection. The testing of the default model was carried out with the structural equation model, to analyze the influence factor discrepancy that factors such as self-efficacy, social context, outcome expectancy, and professional interest has on the willingness to continue education.
The career choice is a continuous decision-making process in the course of human development, and is subject to the mutual influence of personal and environmental factors. How to make the suitable career choice based on one's interests and capabilities has long-term consequences on an individual's career development and achievement, and would also affect the human resource management strategy of a country's professional domains. The results are the following. In the reliability model of the students from the navigational departments, "outcome expectancy" is the primary factor that affects the willingness to continue education, and this factor also directly impacts students from engineering departments. Secondly, self-efficacy is the primary factor that affects the engineering students' willingness to continue education. In concrete terms, social contexts is an indirect impact factor of the willingness to continue education among students of both the navigational and the engineering departments. The higher the willingness to continue education for vocational school students with navigational skills, the higher their chances of becoming seamen.
the main reason that this model constructed for this study based upon Social Cognitive Career Theory can effectively explain the choices of continuing education among maritime vocational high school students is due to the close relationship between each of the variables considered in the study. Other potential variables with direct or indirect effects of impact have also been verified in the process. This study provides not only practical and usable advice for counseling services in vocational high schools but also offer a reference for future research.
