A Case Study on Maritime Students’ Learning of Maritime English Conversations / 海事科系學生學習航海英語會話之個案研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 應用英語研究所 / 107 / Due to the geographic location, maritime industry is highly developed in Taiwan. Therefore the learning of the official communicative language of the marine industry, English, becomes very crucial for the future maritime workers. The purpose of this research is to understand the maritime English learning difficulties and responses of the maritime students.
Artifacts of the teaching materials, exams sheets, students’ entrance grades were collected and carefully analyzed to present the authentic reflections of their learning. Semi-structured interviews in focus group were conducted to understand the maritime students’ learning responses and difficulties toward maritime English.
There are four findings in this study. First, the maritime students showed higher maritime English learning motivation compares to general English because they planned to serve on board. Second, since they seldom had chances to practice English listening, the students reflected that the speed and accents from different countries were their biggest difficulty when listening to maritime English. Third, they were not able to use complete sentences to convey their ideas both when speaking and writing. Instead, they chose to use phrases or key words. Last, limited vocabulary size and spelling difficulties are also the problems when learning maritime English. The above findings all suggest that in order to learn maritime English effectively, general English proficiency of the maritime students must be enhanced to ensure these seafarer-to-be to have successful ocean lives in the future.
Finally, the study gives some suggestions for the future ME learners, instructors, and the future ME studies.
