A Story of the Professional Learning Community at a Chinese Independent High School in Malaysia : A Narrative Inquiry / 南海奇緣—馬來西亞華文獨立中學教師專業學習社群的敘說探究

博士 / 國立臺北教育大學 / 教育經營與管理學系 / 107 / A Chinese independent high school in Malaysia, also called an independent high school, is a secondary school with Chinese language as the intermediate teaching language, does not receive governmental allowance and subsidies, and is not recognized by the government. In the process of educational reform, the enhancement of education quality is the common objective of the 60+1 independent high schools. However, the sources of teachers and the teaching profession have been the major difficulties in the innovation of independent high schools. Taking a Chinese independent high school (Ren Jin High School) in Malaysia as the case school to discuss the issue of teacher professional development, the teaching innovation combining professional learning community with the spirit of learning community is regarded as the research focus. I use narrative inquiry to collect relevant data include document, leadership workshops, in-depth interviews, focus discussion, and observation & reflection on site. Literatures are further reviewed for discussing the relations among teacher professional learning community, teacher professional development, innovative teaching, and school improvement.
In addition to completing the professional development stories of teachers in the professional learning community at Ren Jin High school, the findings lead to the following conclusions.
Teachers in the independent high school use teacher professional learning community to start teacher dynamic and combine the idea of learning community (collaborative lesson preparation, open classroom observation, and collaborative discussion on completed lessons) to attempt to change the teaching methods. It is regarded as the most ideal and beneficial teacher professional development model suitable for the promotion to other Chinese independent high schools and even all school systems in Malaysia.
In addition to above conclusions, the networks between teacher professional development and school improvement are also discovered in this research.
I. School-based teacher professional development experiences are the soil for the germination of teacher professional learning community in Chinese independent high schools in Malaysia.
II. The teacher professional learning community initiated teacher professional development context could connect team dynamic.
III. Teacher professional learning community is the shortcut to practice school-based teacher professional development.
IV. The integration of teacher professional learning community with teacher professional development in learning communities is the lever of school improvement.
According to above conclusions, relevant suggestions are proposed for the reference of Chinese independent high schools developing teacher professionalism and the Taiwan government promoting relevant education policies.
