碩士 / 國立臺灣科技大學 / 應用外語系 / 107 / ABSTRACT
Fresh Off the Boat is the first American sitcom starring a Taiwanese-American family inspired by Eddie Huang’s memoir Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir, illustrating laughers and tears of Huang’s family as an outsider struggling in Orlando. Due to the nature of family sitcom, elements of Chinese culture, Taiwanese culture American culture, and hip hop culture which has greatly influenced Eddie Huang’s values as a Taiwanese-American are significantly involved. In this case, the translation of culture-specific items plays a crucial role for conveying the message of source text to target audience precisely between different cultures and languages. This study aims to discuss the translation strategies of culture-specific items by comparing and analyzing three Chinese versions of Fresh Off the Boat: Season One, investigating the features of translation strategies used and the phenomenon of mistranslation. The present study excerpted all culture-specific items within Fresh Off the Boat: Season One, and categorized them by Liu’s (1993) classification of “cultural obstruction”. After collecting and comparing the taxonomies of translation strategies addressed by Pedersen (2005) and Qiu (1998), a model of rendering culture-specific items has been developed in this study — retention, specification, direct translation, generalization, substitution, omission, footnote, official equivalent and recreation. Analyzing the translations of the strategies above, this study expects to shed light on the fields of subtitle translation and culture-specific items.
