碩士 / 國立臺灣科技大學 / 設計系 / 107 / Science fiction is a movie genre that garners the best box office performance. Science fiction movies not only provide pure entertainment and reflect contemporary trends, they also indicate willingness to explore ideals and visions of future social culture and future technological development trends. The fantasies and ideas of future lifestyles and problem solving methods in movies portray the blueprint of human imagination about the future world, and satisfy public expectations and concerns about the unknown. This research first explored how sci-fi film creators and scholars conceive and interpret sci-fi images, and how movies with futuristic sci-fi image of creatures and environments are created by analyzing similar content sci-fi movies made in recent years. The study delineated two sci-fi imagery categories, with a total of 8 creation techniques.
In the sci-fi creature category, creation techniques included biomimetics and activation, science fantasy, fictional evolution or variation, as well as fictionalizing, magnifying or shrinking of biological behaviors.
In the sci-fi space category, creation techniques included super-technical fictional space, fictionalizing cultural symbols of astronomy and geography, and Utopia/anti-Utopia.
The study outcome is presented in the form of creation, which were produced according to eight conversion techniques for creating sci-fi images. The four groups of works are: (1) Origin of Life, which explored the mysterious and unknown growth environment of unknown and strange science fiction creatures through their bizarre behaviors; (2)Underwater Building, where creatures whose color have changed and bodies have become extremely huge from mutation by mysterious alien radiation constructed urban nests for themselves; (3) Water Landscape, which used organic modules to develop archetypes of aquatic oasis and constructed future forms of aquatic Utopia; and (4) Shimmering Forest, where cognizant of unfavorable outer space environment for living creatures, aquatic organisms in the harsh environment survived through the sci-fi ecological environment created by outer space plants.
