碩士 / 慈濟大學 / 公共衛生學系碩士班 / 106 / Background: The Taiwanese military service policieshas undergone some major changes in the past decade, including the recruitment strategies and training programs of Coast Guard. Nowadays, most of Coast Guardian is voluntary. Ground staff of Coast Guard have to take long-term professional training. However, due to shift work which is associated withsleep disorders and poor health, it could affect the willingness of those who might join or continue to serve in Coast Guard.
Objucts: To assess sleep qualityof ground staff of Coast Guard, to investigaterelated demographic factors, working conditions, and health-related behaviors, to understand the relationship between those factors and sleep quality.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, carried out from December 20, 2017 to December 29, 2017 ina Coast Patrol Corps inPingtung.sleep qualitywas assessed using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, a questionnaire was designed to investigate demographic factors, working conditions, and health-related behaviors.
Result: A total of 217 participants were recruiteds. The mean ± SD global PSQI score was 6.3±2.8. participantswere devided into 2 groups: good sleepgroup =PSQI<6, poor sleep group=PSQI≧6. 46.1% participants were in the good sleep group with PSQI score mean±SD 3.9±1.2; 53.9% participants in the poor sleep group with PSQI score mean±SD 8.3±2.1. The results of Chi-square test have shown that chronic disease, poor family relationship, more days of night work shift, using refreshment, especially caffeine baverages,irregular exercise, and high psychological stress (BSRS-5 Index) were significantly associated with poor sleep quality.
Conclusion: The results did not show a strong relationship between poor sleep quality and shift work, however, it did show that more days of night work shift was associated with poor sleep quality.It is challenging to change the work schedules of Coast Guardian, but the study also shown that regular diet time and exercisebetter ways of dealing family relationship and stress will improve sleep quality.
