A Study of Essential Factor of Galleries in Taiwan in Participating in International Art Fairs / 臺灣畫廊參與海外國際藝術博覽會之參展要素研究

碩士 / 國立臺北藝術大學 / 藝術行政與管理研究所 / 107 / With the trend in contemporary art, art fairs have been considered an important sales channel for the first-level market of art and the sales amount from art fairs has been gradually increasing. However, the cost of joining art fairs has also been increasing, year after year. There are nearly 200 art fairs held every year in the world. With the development of art trade globalization, the gallery industry in Taiwan intends to expand its business sales and promote Asian contemporary art to the overseas market by participating in international art fairs. How does the essential participation factor work? This research uses Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, and adopts the "documentation analysis method" and "in-depth interview method" to study the field operations for the participation of Taiwanese galleries in the overseas art market through international art fairs.

Based on the results of this study, it was discovered that: (1) The art fair system dominates the authority relations of the first-level market; (2) The art fair has changed the way galleries operate; (3) The artist brokers are in the control position of capital conversion for the galleries. At the same time, this study also summarizes the reference indices for the participation of Taiwanese galleries in international art fairs, and they can be regarded as the factor of participation in international art fairs.
