The longer life expectancy of new generations and the aging of the Baby Boom one, present a new challenge and opportunity to the development of housing options for persons of old age. While many of the current models promote age segregation, this master thesis promotes inclusion.
This project attempts to develop an environment that facilitates the interaction between persons in different stages of life with the intention to maximize a mutually rewarding intergenerational interaction.
The focus of this project is the design of an urban apartment building. One that provides small living units but plenty of interior and exterior social spaces interlocked with circulation and services in order to provide unstructured social opportunities. The building site is on the corner of Triangle St and Pray St in Amherst, MA. The majority of the area of the site is currently used as a parking lot and is surrounded by small businesses and services.
