Nos neotrópicos são reconhecidas 28 espécies, encontradas principalmente sob vegetação florestal preservada, com diversas espécies ocorrendo nas Florestas Amazônica e Atlântica e algumas nos domínios do cerrado, restritas às matas de galeria. Representantes de Staurogyne são reconhecidos dentre as Acanthaceae, principalmente, pelo cálice desigual, sendo um segmento posterior maior que os outros, um par de segmentos anteriores de tamanho intermediário, e um par lateral menor que os demais, e pelo androceu com quatro estames geralmente didínamos e um estaminódio; as anteras têm freqüentemente o conectivo dilatado e, embora o nome do gênero faça referência ao estigma bífido, com um dos lobos bipartido (Stauro= cruz; Gine= gineceu), essa característica só se verifica em parte das espécies. O tratamento taxonômico teve início com a consulta à bibliografia especializada, principalmente o protólogo das espécies e sua citação posterior. A análise dos espécimes deu-se, principalmente, baseada em material herborizado e consulta aos tipos nomenclaturais de todas as espécies estudadas. Para cada uma observou-se o maior número possível de indivíduos, para os quais foi preenchida ficha de caracterização morfológica padronizada que, posteriormente, foi empregada para a descrição das espécies. O estudo taxonômico resultou na descoberta de cinco espécies novas, além da proposta de sete lectótipos, quatro neótipos, sete táxons sinonimizados e diversos novos registros para diferentes estados brasileiros e para outros países da América do Sul. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo). / The genus Staurogyne Wall. includes about 80 species in the tropic of the whole world. In the Neotropics 28 species are recognized, especially found in forest preserved areas, many in the Atlantic and Amazon forests and some found in the cerrado domain, exclusively in the gallery forests. Species of Staurogyne are recognized among other Acanthaceae principally by the unequal calyx, with one posterior segment bigger than the others, one anterior pair of segments with intermediary size, and a lateral pair smaller than the others, and by the androecia, with four usually didinamous stamens and a staminode; the anthers usually have the connective expanded and, although the name of the genus is referred to the bifid stigma, with one lobe 2-divided (Stauro= cross; Gine= gynoecia), this characteristic is only presented by part of the species. The taxonomic treatment has begun with the consult of specialized bibliography, mainly the protologues and other citation of the species. The analyses encompassed specially the study of dried collections, and for all the studied species the nomenclatural types were consulted. As many individuals for each species as possible were analyzed, and for each of them was made a standarlized list of morphological features, in which before were based the species descriptions. The taxonomic study results in five news species discovered, besides the proposition of four neotypes, seven lectotypes, sevens sinonimized taxa and many new citation of occurrence to different Brazilian states and also for other south American countries.
