Orientador: Ary dos Santos Pinto / Coorientador: Omar Gabriel da Silva Filho / Banca: Terumi Okada Ozawa / Banca: Dirceu Barnabé Raveli / Resumo: A expansão rápida da maxila consiste em um dos procedimentos utilizados para a correção da deficiência maxilar transversal, situação causada pelo crescimento transversal reduzido da maxila bem como pelo fato de tal crescimento cessar precocemente. Um dos aparelhos recomendados para a correção da atresia do arco superior é o aparelho expansor fixo tipo Haas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as alterações dimensionais da maxila em pacientes na fase de dentadura decídua ou mista com atresia do arco dentário superior, tratados com o aparelho expansor rápido da maxila tipo Haas ou Haas borboleta, com base em radiografias oclusais realizadas antes, após a expansão rápida da maxila e após a remoção do aparelho. Material e Método: A amostra consistiu de radiografias oclusais de controle obtidas no início do tratamento, no final da ativação e logo após a remoção do aparelho, que apresentaram imagens nítidas e com ausência de distorções. Todos os pacientes da amostra foram tratados com aparelhos expansores rápidos da maxila tipo Haas ou Haas borboleta, de acordo com o protocolo padrão de instalação, ativação, contenção e remoção dos aparelhos. Resultados: Analisando o comportamento do arco dentário superior frente a expansão ortopédica da maxila com o uso do aparelho Haas convencional, verifica-se o ganho de de dimensão transversal em todas as medidas avaliadas, com recidiva durante a fase de contenção. Enquanto as dimensões intermolares e a largura da base óssea permaneceram estáveis, as demais medidas apresentaram recidivas. No grupo que utilizou o aparelho Haas borboleta, houve aumento de todas as medidas transversais avaliadas durante a fase ativa da expansão. Sendo o maior ganho observado na distância entre os ápices dos incisivos centrais (4,9mm) e o menor ganho entre as coroas dos incisivos centrais(1,1mm) / Abstract: The rapid maxillary expansion is one of several procedures used for correction of transverse maxillary deficiency, a situation caused by the reduced cross-sectional growth of the maxilla and the early growth cease. One of the appliances recommended for the correction of maxillary deficiency is the fixed Haas expander appliance. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the dimensional changes of the maxillary in patients in the primary or mixed dentition with atresia of the upper arch, treated with rapid maxillary expansion Hass appliance or Haas butterfly, based on occlusal radiographs taken before, after rapid expansion of the maxilla and after removal of the appliance. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of occlusal radiographs control obtained at beginning of the treatment, at the end of activation and after removal of the appliance, which had to be clear, with no distortion. All patients in the study were treated with rapid expansion appliances Haas type or Hass butterfly type, according to the standard protocol of installation, activation, removing, contention and removal of the appliance. Results: Observing the behavior of the upper dental arch facing orthopedic maxillary expansion using conventional Haas appliance, there is gain of the transverse dimension in all parameters measured, with recurrence during the contention. While intermolar dimensions and width of the bone base remained stable, the other measures had recurrences. Conclusion: The group that used the Haas butterfly appliance, had an increase of all transverse measures assessed during the active phase of expansion.
