To experience or reach up to demands? : A study about how upper secondary school students experience performance demands in physical education and health classes.

Aim

The purpose of the study was to investigate how upper secondary school students experience performance demands during their physical education and health classes (PE-classes). The questions were as following: Are there differing perceptions between the sexes whether students experience performance demands? In what situations do the students feel that the demands on their performance are high during PE-classes? Do the students experience of demands on performance differ whether the physical education and health teacher is male or female? Do students feel unfairly treated by the physical education and health teacher during PE-classes?

Method

Seven upper secondary schools in Stockholm’s administrative district were randomly selected to participate in the survey. The principals were contacted for further information and to set a date for performing the survey. The project leaders were present during the days the surveys were taken by students in the social science and natural science programs. After the survey was performed all data compilation was done manually, with the exception of X2 (chi two) that was calculated in the computer program Excel. The results was accounted for along two different divisions, one based on the gender of the student, and one based on the gender of the physical education and health teacher. Finally the results were compared with existing research.

Results

The study shows that there are different opinions between the sexes in how upper secondary school students experience demands on performance during PE-classes. Despite the differences between the sexes, more than 50 % of the students experienced high demands on performance during competition elements, practical exams, when their classmates were observing them, in individual sports events, in team sports, at grading and when the students wanted to perform an exercise correctly. The gender of the physical education and health teacher affected the students experience of high performance demands. 21 % of the 1013 studied students also felt they were being treated unfairly by the physical education and health teacher during PE-classes.

Conclusion

A lot of upper secondary school students felt high demands on performance at different situations in the PE-classes, and felt unfairly treated by the physical education and health teacher. The female students experienced high demands on performance more often than the male students in PE-classes.
/

Metod
