“När det är roligare så är det roligare att lära sig. När det inte är så kul då är det inte kul” : elevers uppfattningar av undervisningsformer i engelska

In this research study, we test different teaching methods with Swedish middle school students in English as a second language and evaluate their perception and opinion of the different methods. The two teaching methods that have been tried are a traditional method, which consists of passive and sedentary learning, where textbooks and workbooks are the main focus. The other method is a varied and multimodal teaching method. This consists of more active and interactive lessons where the students used several different senses, for example in drama or when they got the chance to physically interact with different objects or tools when learning new words. This research addresses the questions, “How do students describe their teaching in English as a foreign language?” and “How do different teaching methods affect students' motivation?”. The result of this study shows that students think their English lessons are boring, unmotivated and passive and that they need a varied teaching that stimulates all students' different needs. This varied teaching method consists of active and interactive lessons, but also more traditional methods like glossary, translating a text and working with a textbook and workbook.
