Läs- och skrivsvårigheter och negativa självbilder : En studie om lågstadielärares arbetsmetoder med läs- och skrivsvårigheter / Reading- and writing difficulties and negative self-perceptions : A study on methods for reading- and writing comprehension in primary school

The aim with this study is to find out more about how primary school teachers’ are aware of the connection between reading- and writing difficulties and negative self-perceptions and possible preventive actions. The empirical data in the study consists of three qualitative research interviews with active primary teachers. The teachers that were interviewed seemed aware of the correlation between reading- and writing difficulties and pupil’s self-perceptions, although they did not always find it easy to detect the specific problems that these pupils have regarding reading and writing. The strategies they used to prevent negative self-perceptions of pupils with reading- and writing difficulties correlated to a high degree with previous research. These strategies are honesty, encouragement, to focus on success and advocate that everyone is different when it comes to learning. Other effective strategies that focus on teaching are to teach phonological awareness, the alphabet, learning strategies, vocabulary and writing. Repeated reading, intensive training, and one-on-one-teaching are also effective strategies for helping these pupils.
