This study aim to investigate the conditions framing the professional development situation for physical education teachers (PE) in a small municipality in the south of Sweden. The Swedish National Agency for Education declare that "focus must be directed towards strengthening the teachers' profession", and that "schools need well-trained teachers and good teaching to help students achieve good results". The study focuses both the schools’ contribution and the way in which the teachers take own initiative and are motivated to develop their professional skills. The investigation is all based on teachers' perspectives. In order to contribute and acquire knowledge of PE teacher’s professional development situation, we have used a survey of a quantitative nature with some qualitative elements which is analysed with the help of framefactor theory and motivation theories. Results show that factors like money and time have great influence on the situation. The schools’ contribution is crucial, since many teachers are not involved in individual planning of aims and skills development and forms for their professional development. The result also shows that PE teachers' motivation and attitude are factors to consider. In what way they take initiative to develop their skills and how they want to achieve professional development is also crucial for the entire professional development situation.
