Vic le Victorieux ou Karlsson sur le toit? : Analyse comparative entre deux traductions françaises d'un livre d'enfant suédois

All translators must ask themselves the question: « Shall I do a literal translation or shall I do a free translation? ». Research will say that to achieve a near translation it is necessary to take into account the grammatical structure, the linguistic variety, the semantics and the pragmatics. Through time, the translation will be influenced by the context in which it is produced, and by the ambitions and the personality of the translator. In this essay, the Swedish book Lillebror och Karlsson på taket, a children’s book written by Astrid Lindgren, was compared with its translations, and problems concerning structural and cultural differences between the target language and the source language were analysed. A comparison was made between the first two chapters of two French versions (from 1980 and 2008). One of these versions had been translated from a second language, in this case from English. One of the aims of this essay was to show the methods used to solve problems while translating from a second language into a third language. Another aim was to find which French version was more truthful to the original Swedish version. The comparison revealed cultural, structural and narrative differences, as well as some cuts and additions in the versions, especially in the first French translation. The conclusion of the analysis was that the newest French version was more faithful to the original Swedish version and aimed to show a new culture to the readers. It also preserved Swedish expressions as well as the narrative style of Astrid Lindgren, even if this sometimes was at the expense of the French language.
