The study aims to investigate the characteristics of media coverage surrounding the clown attacks. To answer the purpose a quantitative content analysis was applied and also a comprehensive survey of the material. The goal is to see how the established criteria for newsworthiness function in relation to a contemporary news event in Sweden. The results show that the clown attacks are consistent with the majority of the criteria of newsworthiness. Most common were male offenders and the distribution between male and female victims was equal. Further analysis demonstrated that images portraying clowns was something that distinguished media coverage surrounding the clown attacks. The published clown pictures were of scary and evil clowns, which can be linked to how the news media’s coverage of the clown attacks was.
