Utsatta områdens representation i svensk riksmedia : En diskursanalys med WPR-ansats

The discourse surrounding Utsatta områden in Sweden is one of controversy as this notion is interlinked with issues such as deadly shootings, poverty and narcotics, which stir emotions on a national scale. This study aims to identify, analyse and question conceptions and values woven into the concept of Utsatta områden that are rationalized as truths or taken for granted. This is done by using a ‘What’s the problem represented to be?’ framework in order to critically deconstruct the discourse, exposing underlying assumptions and values within. Furthermore, the result of this study is examined in relation to territorial stigmatization theory, labelling theory as well as neoliberalism in order to discuss potential risks and contributing factors to the medias representation of utsatta områden. In accordance with territorial stigmatization theory utsatta områden risks being stigmatized by the media's representation of the phenomenon which can create harmful prejudices towards utsatta områden and its inhabitants, a view that is supported by labelling theory. Lastly the underlying political structures contributing to the concrete situation of utsatta områden, as well as the medias representation of them, can be attributed to neoliberal influences but these are however left out of the medial discourse.
