Varför tappar en del elever läslusten? / Why do some children in primary school lose interest in reading?

The aim of the study was to investigate why some primary school children without any apparent reading difficulties have lost their interest in reading. Three children from the 5th and three from the 8th grade were interviewed about their reading habits in school and at home and the results were analyzed in relation to the factors affecting interest in reading identified by reading research and in relation to the interviews done with their teachers. The results showed that the younger children saw themselves as good readers, expressed interest in reading and had increased their reading whereas the older children were much less positive about their reading. The factors that affect children's interest in reading found by the research, such as adult support and reading aloud, help and advice in finding interesting books to read and talks about the contents in the books before and after reading were among the factors identified by both younger and older children as important to their reading motivation.
