Design och visuell estetik inom infographics

Infographics are a relatively new type of artefact in the digital domain, but the medium has a long history from the scientific community. Mostly used to communicate scientific data in clear and visually appealing ways, the medium now has expanded to blogs and social media for either commercial or entertainment purposes. This thesis focuses on the aesthetics of interaction design and infographics. Through observation of infographic artefacts two separate types of visual styles were identified, minimalism and expressiveness. From these two styles, four infographics were designed and tested through a questionnaire. 22 respondents expressed their opinions and reactions to the infographics verbally. From our qualitative analysis we find that the minimalistic designs were considered formal, elegant but lacking in engagement, while the expressive designs were considered beautiful, engaging but occassionally messy and ineffective. We also found indications that subject matter and certain specifics of visual aesthetics might incur reactions on a personal level.
