Employee engagement is a widely acknowledged factor for pursuing organizational change,where internal communication can serve as a key driver for achieving such an outcome. In aworld characterized by an increasing demand for sustainable solutions, sustainability engagedemployees can be a successful recipe for organizations. Middle managers are influentialemployees, thereby making organizations derive substantial value from their commitment tosustainability. The aim of this study is to seek knowledge about how internal sustainabilitycommunication occurs within a large Swedish forestry company, as well as its significance forthe sustainability engagement of middle managers, in their role as an employee. Based onprior research, the study’s model of analysis characterizes internal sustainabilitycommunication as either effective or ineffective, depending on its level of routine and thechosen communication channels. Sustainability engagement in the model of analysis is basedon six influencing factors: information, support, identification, role, performance and voice.To examine the aim of the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted and subsequentlyanalyzed. The study found that middle managers at SCA had high sustainability engagement,but the significance of internal sustainability communication was divided due to the challengeof distinguishing specific sustainability communication from the general internalcommunication prevalent in a sustainability-driven organization.
