[pt] Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar como as Instituições Comunitárias de Ensino Superior no seu compromisso com a sociedade compreendem a extensão universitária. Sob a ótica da indissociabilidade com o ensino e a pesquisa, a extensão tem caminhado em busca de sua consolidação enquanto espaço de aprendizagem institucionalmente reconhecido na academia contribuindo, assim, para a reflexão da conjuntura social contemporânea, uma vez que a universidade está ligada à sociedade por um fio condutor chamado responsabilidade social. O estudo empírico da pesquisa foi desenvolvido em território nacional, com recorte regional, em seis instituições de ensino superior católicas que atendem ao requisito legal de universidade comunitária. Para tanto, a pesquisa de caráter qualitativo, utilizou-se do método da triangulação, que possibilitou a combinação de coleta de dados, teorias e amostras para consolidar as conclusões a respeito do desenvolvimento da extensão nessas universidades. Foram realizadas individualmente, dezessete entrevistas semiestruturada, via plataforma virtual, tendo como participantes gestores, alunos e professores. Buscou-se informações acerca do desenvolvimento/construção da extensão nessas instituições cujas respostas foram analisadas utilizando a análise de conteúdo como suporte metodológico. Os resultados alcançados apontam que a extensão nestas insituições é compreendida como questão identitária manifestando-se como razão de existir dessas universidades. Contudo, para o reconhecimento do seu verdadeiro valor acadêmico dentro e fora dos muros universitários ainda se faz necessário grande empenho por parte dos atores envolvidos no que se refere a implantação, implementação e, consequentemente, consolidação dessa política como parte fundamental da missão das universidades comunitárias. / [en] This study aims to analyze how Community Higher Education Institutions, in their commitment to society, understand university extension. From the point of view of inseparability with teaching and research, extension has walked in search of its consolidation as an institutionally recognized learning space in the academy, thus contributing to the reflection of the contemporary social conjuncture, since the university is linked to society, by a common thread called social responsibility. The empirical study of the research was developed in the national territory, with a regional focus, in six Catholic higher education institutions that meet the legal requirement of a community university. Therefore, the qualitative research used the triangulation method, which allowed the combination of data collection, theories and samples to consolidate the conclusions regarding the development of extension in these universities. Seventeen semi-structured interviews were carried out individually, via a virtual platform, with managers, students and teachers as participants. Information about the development/construction of the extension was sought in the institutions whose responses were analyzed using content analysis as a methodological support. The results achieved indicate that the extension in these institutions is understood as an identity issue manifesting itself as the reason for existing of these universities. However, for the recognition of its true academic value inside and outside the university walls, great commitment is still necessary on the part of the actors involved with regard to the implementation, implementation and, consequently, consolidation of this policy as a fundamental part of the mission of community universities.
