The essay analyses the evolution through the centuries XVII-XX of a number of different adaptations of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The analysis is enriched by cross-medial references to the history of Shakespearean iconography, that intersecates and sometimes guides the development of new readings and rewritings of The Tempest.
