Role of Consortia on Library and Information Science EducationMajumder, Apurba Jyoti January 2007 (has links)
The way and pace at which information is generated, organized and used is
witnessed rapid strides in recent times. Hence, the discipline of LIS meant to
manage and provide information service may not be taught effectively and practiced
perfectly through a framed curriculum in the formal education steam alone. Driven
by the market demands and user needs, the discipline is embracing other disciplines
like computers, communication technology, cognition research etc. to continuously
monitor and augment their skills to arrive at â pinpointed information from the
delugeâ . Manual means of tackling information will not help the user/professional to
solve emerging problems in the actual research setup and also the present day
researchers expect a faster response to their information needs. Information
management and servicing in a highly matured and skill intensive activity and it
requires people with different educational backgrounds. Electronic access is
increasingly providing a large proportion of current information instead of print and
allowing access through a variety of platforms on a twenty-four hour basis. As the
traditional custodians of information, librarians need to be aware of the implications
of these changes and develop technological and managerial skills that will enable
them to make effective use of information to meet their organization and changing
needs. However, many librarians lack confidence to learn and master the skills
required in adopting the increasingly sophisticated technology. It is vital that they
must be kept in touch with modern developments and maintains a proactive
approach to work in an ever-changing information world. Professional profiles are
changing so rapidly and very radically these days impacting the librarianâ s portfolio,
since libraries are becoming knowledge management organizations with librarians
as their active agents. Perhaps the most important development of libraries during
the current decade has been the move from organizational self-sufficiency to a
collaborative survival mode as personified by the growth of library consortia.
Information technology is now a level of cooperation that is much broader and deeper
than ever before

Shape morphing of complex geometries using partial differential equations.Gonzalez Castro, Gabriela, Ugail, Hassan January 2007 (has links)
An alternative technique for shape morphing
using a surface generating method using partial differential
equations is outlined throughout this work. The boundaryvalue
nature that is inherent to this surface generation
technique together with its mathematical properties are
hereby exploited for creating intermediate shapes between
an initial shape and a final one. Four alternative shape
morphing techniques are proposed here. The first one is
based on the use of a linear combination of the boundary
conditions associated with the initial and final surfaces,
the second one consists of varying the Fourier mode for
which the PDE is solved whilst the third results from a
combination of the first two. The fourth of these alternatives
is based on the manipulation of the spine of the surfaces,
which is computed as a by-product of the solution. Results
of morphing sequences between two topologically nonequivalent
surfaces are presented. Thus, it is shown that the
PDE based approach for morphing is capable of obtaining
smooth intermediate surfaces automatically in most of the
methodologies presented in this work and the spine has been
revealed as a powerful tool for morphing surfaces arising
from the method proposed here.

Reconstruction of 3D human facial images using partial differential equations.Elyan, Eyad, Ugail, Hassan January 2007 (has links)
One of the challenging problems in geometric
modeling and computer graphics is the construction of
realistic human facial geometry. Such geometry are
essential for a wide range of applications, such as 3D face
recognition, virtual reality applications, facial expression
simulation and computer based plastic surgery application.
This paper addresses a method for the construction of 3D
geometry of human faces based on the use of Elliptic Partial
Differential Equations (PDE). Here the geometry
corresponding to a human face is treated as a set of surface
patches, whereby each surface patch is represented using
four boundary curves in the 3-space that formulate the
appropriate boundary conditions for the chosen PDE. These
boundary curves are extracted automatically using 3D data
of human faces obtained using a 3D scanner. The solution of
the PDE generates a continuous single surface patch
describing the geometry of the original scanned data. In this
study, through a number of experimental verifications we
have shown the efficiency of the PDE based method for 3D
facial surface reconstruction using scan data. In addition to
this, we also show that our approach provides an efficient
way of facial representation using a small set of parameters
that could be utilized for efficient facial data storage and
verification purposes.

Evaluation of publish – subscribe protocols for vehicle communications / Utvärdering av publish-subscribe-protokoll för fordonskommunikationStrihagen, Karl January 2017 (has links)
Vehicles connected to networks of other vehicles is one promising example of the Internet of Things (IoT). Companies operating fleets of vehicles can benefit from thepossibility to aggregate all of the information that is generated from this network inorder to optimise their logistics and operations. Underlying this network is the need fora communication link that can connect distributed vehicles and efficient protocols tomanage the transmission of information. For vehicles, the cellular network is the best communication infrastructure available.Since cellular usage has a monetary cost that is proportional to data use, this thesisevaluates three protocols (MQTT, MQTT-SN and AMQP) in terms of how much datathey use during typical scenarios with regard to communications patterns and payload.Three different payload sizes were used to simulate different message types, and thepackage loss rate on the communication link was varied from 0% to 30% to bettersimulate real world conditions. The results showed that for small payload sizes the overhead can be the same order ofmagnitude as the payload and MQTT-SN performs significantly better than bothMQTT and AMQP. However, for larger payloads, this effect diminishes. For the largerpayload MQTT-SN actually consumed more data than the other two protocols. Underthe more lossy conditions tested there are some problems running experiments, such asthe underlaying TCP connection breaking in some cases and the time to complete thetask becomes very long. MQTT and AMQP generally performed about the same inmost aspects in the tests, with the exception of how they handle TCPacknowledgements. / Fordon som är anslutna till ett nätverk är en lovande applikation av sakernas internt (eng.Internet of Things).

MK2 and ETV1 Are Prognostic Factors in Esophageal AdenocarcinomasJomrich, Gerd, Maroske, Florian, Stieger, Jasmin, Preusser, Matthias, Ilhan-Mutlu, Aysegül, Winkler, Daniel, Kristo, Ivan, Paireder, Matthias, Schoppmann, Sebastian Friedrich January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Background. Esophageal cancer is ranked in the top ten of diagnosed tumors worldwide. Even though
improvements in survival could be noticed over the last years, prognosis remains poor. ETS
translocation variant 1 (ETV1) is a member of a family of transcription factors and is phosphorylated
by mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-activated protein kinase 2 (MK2). Aim of this study was
to evaluate the prognostic role of MK2 and ETV1 in esophageal cancer.
Methods. Consecutive patients that underwent surgical resection at the department of surgery at the
Medical University of Vienna between 1991 and 2012 were included into this study. After
microscopic analysis, tissue micro arrays (TMAs) were created and immunohistochemistry was
performed with antibodies against MK2 and ETV1.
Results. 323 patients were included in this study. Clinical data was achieved from a prospective
patient data base. Nuclear overexpression of MK2 was observed in 143 (44.3%) cases for nuclear
staining and in 142 (44.0%) cases a cytoplasmic overexpression of MK2 was observed. Nuclear and
cytoplasmic ETV1 overexpression was detected in 20 cases (6.2%) and 30 cases (9.3%), respectively.
In univariate survival analysis, cMK2 and nETV1 were found to be significantly associated with
patients' overall survival. Whereas overexpression of cMK2 was associated with shorter, nETV1
was associated with longer overall survival. In multivariate survival analysis, both cMK2 and nETV1
were found to be independent prognostic factors for the subgroup of EAC as well.
Discussion. Expression of MK2 and ETV1 are prognostic factors in patients, with esophageal
adenocarcinoma.
