The design, construction and testing of a mobile essential oil distillation unit.

Steam distillation is the most widely accepted process for the large scale production of volatile essential oils from herbaceous material and is also regarded as the standard practice throughout the flavour and fragrance industry. A mobile essential oil distillation unit for the extraction of oils from herbaceous materials would be extremely valuable to the essential oil industry in South Africa. Using a mobile platform, the extraction technology could be taken to rural areas where essential oil crops are grown in order to extract and then analyse the oils produced. Existing systems in South Africa are static distillation units which are usually owned by commercial growers that are generally positioned large distances away from the rural areas. The objective of this project was to design, construct and test a prototype mobile distillation unit for the extraction of essential oils from herbaceous materials. The unit was to have a charge vessel capacity of approximately 250 kg of plant material and should be able to perform in-field distillations in areas where electricity is not available. A literature review on all the essential oil extraction methods, the theory behind steam distillation and oil isolation and the effect that each of the distillation components have on the distillation process was performed. A small test distillation unit was set up in a laboratory in order to investigate the effects of varying steam flow . rates on the distillation time, oil yield and oil quality. A double charge vessel unit was designed, constructed and mounted onto a frame which in turn was fixed onto a trailer to be hauled by a light delivery vehicle (LDV). The steam generator with all its ancillary equipment was fixed onto a separate trailer. The unit could thus be easily transported and in-field distillations on various crops could be conducted. Field distillations were conducted with two crop types, namely rose geranium and lemon grass. Refinement of modelling tools to assess potential agrohydrological impacts of climate change in southern Africa.

Changes in climate due to anthropogenic influences are expected to affect both hydrological and agricultural systems in southern Africa. Studies on the potential impacts of climate change on agrohydrological systems had been performed previously in the School of Bioresources Engineering and Environmental Hydrology (School of BEEH). However, refinement of these modelling tools and restructuring of the databases used was needed to enable more realistic and dynamic simulations of the impacts of changes in climate. Furthermore, it was realised that modifications and linkages of various routines would result in a faster processing time to perform climate impact assessments at the catchment scale. Baseline ("present") climatic information for this study was obtained from the School of BEEH's database. Scenarios of future climate were obtained from six General Circulation Models (GCMs). Output from the five GCMs which provided monthly climate output was used in the climate impact assessments carried out. Potential changes in variability of rainfall resulting from climate change was assessed using the daily climate output from the sixth GCM. As the spatial resolution of the climatic output from these GCMs was too coarse for use in climate impact studies the GCM output was interpolated to a finer spatial resolution. To assess the potential impact of climate change on water resources in southern Africa the ACRU hydrological modelling system was selected. The ACRU model was, however, initially modified and updated to enable more dynamic simulation of climate change. In previous hydrological studies of climate change in southern Africa Quaternary Catchments were modelled as individual, isolated catchments. To determine the potential impact of changes in climate on accumulated flows in large catchments the configuration of the Quaternary Catchments needed to be determined and this configuration used in ACRU. The changes in hydrological responses were calculated both as absolute differences between future and present values and the ratio offuture hydrological response to the present response. The large degree of uncertainty between the GCMs was reflected in the wide range of results obtained for the water resources component of this study. In addition to the climate impact studies, sensitivity and threshold studies were performed using ACRU to assess the vulnerability of regions to changes in climate. Potential change in the yields and distributions of parameters important to agriculture, such as heat units, crops, pastures and commercial tree species were assessed using simple crop models at a quarter ofdegree latitude / longitude scale. Most species were simulated to show decreases in yields and climatically suitable areas. There are many sources of uncertainties when performing climate impact assessments and the origins of these uncertainties were investigated. Transient pressure waves in hillslopes.

Previous studies found that during a rainfall event, pre-event water, which exists in the catchment before the event, may appear in significant amounts in the stream stormflow hydrograph. Pre-event water is predominantly groundwater. Among the mechanisms that have been proposed to explain the rapid mobilization of pre-event water from hillslopes are: (1) groundwater ridging (GWR) i.e. the rapid rise of a water table in environments, where the capillary fringe, or the zone of tension saturation, is very close to the ground surface and (2) the Lisse Effect (LE) i.e. the rapid response of a groundwater level to pressurized pore air in the unsaturated zone. Published literature explains that GWR is caused by the application of a small amount of water on the ground surface. On the LE, it is explained that pressurized pore air acts at the water table, resulting in a rapid rise of the water level in a well, screened below the water table. These explanations are insufficient on the physical processes involved in GWR and the LE. The objectives of this study were: (1) to use the commonly observed catchment hydrological processes i.e. tensiometric pore water pressure, shallow groundwater levels, rainfall data and the hydraulic properties of soils, to quantify and describe the physical processes involved in GWR and the LE mechanisms; (2) to perform laboratory experiments, in order to understand the physical processes involved in the LE; and (3) to develop a mathematical theory that can describe the physical processes in the LE. Results indicated that GWR and the LE are caused by the addition (elevation) of potential energy in water within the capillary fringe. In GWR, the additional energy is from the intense rainfall. In the LE, the additional energy is from compressed pore air in the unsaturated zone. In both mechanisms, the added energy diffuses through the capillary fringe, as a downward pressure wave, releasing the tension forces in water. As soon as the downward pressure wave-front arrives at the water table, the water table begins to ascend, as an upward pressure wave. The ascending water table steepens the hydraulic gradient, which results in the rapid groundwater fluxes, without the recharge of the water table by the infiltration profile. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2013.

Process and modelling studies in forest hydrology.

The demand for timber products in South Africa, and consequently afforestation, is increasing. There exists, however, abundant experimental evidence that trees utilise more soil water than other dryland crops. Because water is limited in South Africa, decision makers therefore currently face the challenge of determining a socially, and economically acceptable afforestation management plan to enable the reconciliation of increased timber demand with scarce water supply. This challenge, and the subsequent decisions that need to be made, may be accomplished by making use of suitable simulation models to predict the impacts of the forest hydrological system on water resources. Currently, these impacts are assessed through an Afforestation Permit System (APS) which is based on a model now acknowledged to have become outdated. In this dissertation an enhanced ACRU Forest Decision Support System (FDSS), now called the ACRU Forest model, is developed and proposed as a tool for modelling forest hydrological impacts on water resources. Research for this study included a literature survey, fieldwork at two locations, viz. at forest irrigation trials at Mkuze in northern KwaZulu-Natal, and at forest site preparation trials near Ugie in the Eastern Cape, as well as the evaluation, for purposes of model development, of a series of workshops. Results from the fieldwork experiments show that large tree water use potentials are possible if water is not limiting, although a water supply threshold exists at about 1400mm.annum-1, above which diminishing growth returns occur. Furthermore, trees display improved growth on more intensive forest site preparations, but at the expense of higher water usage rates. A series of workshops which had as the main objective the extraction of expert knowledge by stimulating responses to prepared questions and by constructive discussion on relative issues pertaining to forest hydrological modelling, yielded valuable information. This information, together with that gleaned from the literature, the fieldwork and a new Quaternary catchment database for South Africa, was used to develop the ACRU Forest model. The PC-based ACRU Forest model has the potential to aid decision makers by providing an initial indication of the impacts of afforestation on water resources, within a matter of minutes. Development of a geographic data model for hydrological modelling.

Hydrology is a multi-disciplinary science, and therefore derives data from diverse sources, with the data often of a spatio-temporal nature. A recent trend has been to combine these data with GIS, due to the data’s geographic origin, and inherently requires an abstraction of reality in order to deal with the multitude of data that would otherwise result. Consequently, data models have been developed for this purpose, and these require a generalisation of processes and variables, while offering a simplified structure for their storage. The purpose of this study was to develop a data model for the storage and dissemination of hydrological variables and associated data used in hydrological modelling. Data would be of a spatial and temporal nature, and thus the design of the new data model needed to provide for this. A number of existing geographic data models were therefore reviewed, including the geodatabase model. This data model and the object-relational database model upon which it was built, were ascertained as being the most suitable for the study, and were therefore included in the design of the new data model. The related Arc Hydro data model was subsequently reviewed, since it offered an established means by which to model geographic features associated with surface hydrology. Following this, an investigation into time series storage methods was carried out, as it was important that the new data model be able to store large time series datasets in an efficient manner. Thus a number of methods were identified and evaluated as to their advantages and disadvantages. A new data model was thereby conceived, using the geodatabase as its foundation, and was developed in order to offer efficient storage of hydrological data. The data model developed was subsequently tested by populating it with data from the Quaternary Catchments database which supports the ACRU model. The evaluation of pressure distribution and bulk density models for infield agriculture and forestry traffic.

There is evidence that soil compaction, through the use of mechanised equipment, causes detrimental effects to soil quality and reduces long-term productivity of soils. For economic reasons, farmers need to purchase larger, heavier machinery in order to cultivate larger areas under crops, resulting in larger forces on the soil. The severity of soil compaction is governed by various soil and vehicle properties and normally causes an increase in the soil's bulk density and a decrease in the air filled porosity. These changes in soil properties have negative effects on crop production and environmental sustainability. The aim of this study was to investigate and develop a model based decision support system for soil compaction management and research. Soil compaction occurs during the transfer of stresses from the tyre interface into the soil. Numerically, it has been modelled using both mechanistic and empirical models, which attempt to simulate the stress propagation and also sometimes the consequent damage to the soil. The SOCOMO soil compaction model is described and this model computes the stress at a point in the soil for any given horizontal and vertical stress distribution at the soil / tyre interface. It has been successfully used in the Netherlands and in Sweden to map the impact on the soil. The SOCOMO model was tested and verified at a forestry site in Richmond, KwaZulu- Natal. Relationships to determine bulk density were also tested and verified. The SOCOMO model performs satisfactory (RMSE = 47.9 kPa), although it tends to overestimate the pressures within the soil. This could be as a result of the high organic carbon content in the particular soil. Models predicting bulk density also performed satisfactory (RMSE = 69.9 kg.m" ), but resultant densities in the soil are generally underestimated. Future research is needed to find better relationships to estimate changes in dry bulk density and to test the model on a wider range of soils. If the model performs satisfactory it could provide a useful tool to determine the impact of soil compaction on crop yield. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.

An integrated sugarcane supply chain model : development and demonstration.

The South African sugar industry is a large industry which relies on expensive capital equipment to harvest, transport and process sugarcane. An average of 23 million tons of sugarcane are annually supplied to 14 mills from over 2 000 large-scale commercial growers and 48 000 small-scale growers. Supply chain stakeholders can benefit if operations are successfully streamlined. Computer-based mathematical models have been used in other industries to improve supply chains, especially in forestry, and are expected to play an increasingly important role in future planning and management. Management of sugar supply chains has historically focussed on generating competitive individual supply chain components. However, inter-component optimisation generally disregards many important intra-component interactions. Hence, efficiency improvements may be significantly limited. Integrated supply chain modelling provides a suitable approach for addressing this problem. The aim of this project was to develop and demonstrate, in concept, an integrated supply chain model for the sugar industry. Such a model could be used to address various integrated planning and management problems throughout the supply chain. A review of existing integrated agri-supply chain models was conducted followed by the development of CAPCONN, an integrated sugar supply chain model framework, that incorporate all steps from field to mill back end. CAPCONN estimates sugarcane quality, mill recovery, capacity utilisation and production costs. Bottlenecks are highlighted and the model could contribute towards capacity manipulation for efficiency improvements under different harvesting scenarios. CAPCONN was demonstrated by analysing a number of scenarios in a mechanisation case study at Komati Mill where sugarcane is currently burned and manually cut. A total of twelve scenarios were compared, including variations in cropping system and time of year. The model framework predicted that a decrease in sugarcane quality and sugar recovery would occur under mechanical harvesting scenarios. Estimated production costs were also higher, even though the transport fleet was significantly reduced. A manually cut green (unburned) harvesting scenario showed a further decrease in sugarcane quality and sugar recovery. Mechanical harvesting during wet weather caused a substantial reduction in supply chain capacity and an increase in production costs. CAPCONN output trends compared favourably with measured and observed data, though the magnitude of the trends should be viewed with caution, since the CAPCONN framework is only a prototype. This shows that it may be a suitable diagnostic framework for analysing and investigating the sugarcane supply chain as a single entity. With further development to a model, the CAPCONN model framework could be used as a strategic planning tool although, one drawback is that a relatively large number of technical inputs are required to run the model. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2006.

Validation of a vehicle performance modelling system.

Transport costs can account for a significant portion of the total production costs in an agricultural system. In order to ensure maximum efficiency of a transport operation, the transport manager is required to select a suitable vehicle and choose the best route. This is a complex process as vehicles should not be selected based solely on lowest capital cost, but with several variables taken into account. In order to determine an optimal haulage system and to aid the decision making process, a computer model called SimTrans has been developed. SimTrans simulates a haulage vehicle travelling on any given route under normal vehicle operating conditions. The model produces a set of simulated vehicle performance results and a summary of trip details. The vehicle input parameters and route details can be modified to enable the user to simulate different vehicle configurations on alternate routes. The SimTrans model was used in this research project as it provides a comprehensive output of simulated results. However, under certain conditions there is variance between actual and the simulated vehicle performance in SimTrans, particularly with the gear selection routines. The primary objective of this research was to refine, calibrate and validate the current SimTrans model. An initial investigation focused on diesel engine management systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles and how these systems affect a vehicle's performance. This investigation was aimed at gaining an understanding of how performance data could be gathered directly from the onboard vehicle electronics of a haulage vehicle. A data logging system was developed to measure and record certain operating parameters of a haulage vehicle during operation. The system was installed on a Mercedes Benz 2637 and the vehicle was driven on two alternative routes between the Eston Sugar Mill and a loading zone near Mid-Illovo. The Mercedes Benz 2637 used for the vehicle tests was simulated in SimTrans using identical operating conditions of route and speed limits. By comparing the observed and simulated data sets, errors particularly with gear selection routines were identified. The SimTrans model was modified such that these errors were corrected and a new gear skipping routine was added. The modified SimTrans model was validated through a comparison of a new set of simulated results with the observed data. Improved estimation of catchment rainfall for continuous simulation modelling.

Long sequences of rainfall at fme spatial and temporal details are increasingly required, not only for hydrological studies, but also to provide inputs for models of crop growth, land fills, tailing dams, disposal of liquid waste on land and other environmentally-sensitive projects. However, rainfall records from raingauges frequently fail to meet the requirements of the above studies. Therefore, it is important to improve the estimation of the depth and spatial distribution of rainfall falling over a catchment. A number of techniques have been developed to improve the estimation of the spatial distribution of rainfall from sparsely distributed raingauges. These techniques range from simple interpolation techniques developed to estimate areal rainfall from point rainfall measurements, to statistical and deterministic models, which generate rainfall values and downscale the rainfall values based on the physical properties of the clouds or rain cells. Furthermore, these techniques include different statistical methods, which combine the rainfall information gathered from radar, raingauges and satellites. Although merging the radar and raingauge rainfall fields gives a best estimate of the "true rainfall field", the length of the radar record and spatial coverage of the radar in a country such as South Africa is relatively short and hence is of limited use in hydrological studies. Therefore, the relationship between the average merged rainfall value for a catchment and a "driver" station, which is selected to represent rainfall in the catchment, is developed and assessed in this study. Rainfall data from the Liebenbergsvlei Catchment near Bethlehem in the Free State Province and a six-month record of radar data are used to develop relationships between the average merged subcatchment rainfall for each of the Liebenbergsvlei subcatchments and a representative raingauge selected to represent the rainfall in each of the subcatchments. The relationships between daily raingauges and the average rainfall depth of the subcatchments are generally good and in most of the subcatchments the correlation coefficient is greater than 0.5. It was also noted that, in most of the subcatchments, the daily raingauges overestimate the average areal rainfall depth of the subcatchments. In addition, the String of Beads Model (SBM) developed by Clothier and Pegram (2002) was used to generate synthetic rainfall series for the Liebenbergsvlei catchments. The SBM is able to produce rainfall values at a spatial resolution of IxI km with a 5 minute temporal resolution. The SBM is a high-resolution space-time model of radar rainfall images, which takes advantage of the detailed spatial and temporal information captured by weather radar and combines it with the long-term seasonal variation captured by a network of daily raingauges. Statistics from a 50 year period of generated rainfall values were compared with the statistics computed from a 50 year raingauge data series, and it was found that the generated rainfall values mimic the rainfall data from the raingauges reasonably well. The relationship developed between the merged catchment rainfall values and driver rainfall station values, which are selected to represent the mean areal rainfall of the subcatchment, was used to adjust the Conventional Driver rainfall Station (CDS) into Modified Driver Station (MDS) values. Streamflow was simulated using both the CDS and MDS rainfall compared against the observed streamflow from the Liebenbergsvlei catchment. In general, the streamflow simulated by the ACRU model do not correlate well with the observed streamflow, which is attributed to unrealistic observed flow and inter-catchments transfers of water. However, it is noted that the volume of streamflow simulated with the MDS rainfall is only 71 % of that simulated with the CDS rainfall, thus highlighting the limitation of using the CDS rainfall approach for modelling and the need to apply the methodology to improve the estimation of catchment rainfall developed in this study to other catchments in South Africa. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2005.

The design and testing of soil pressure sensors for in-field agricultural and forestry traffic.

River stage or flow rates are required for the design and evaluation of hydraulic structures. Most river reaches are ungauged and a methodology is needed to estimate the stages, or rates of flow, at specific locations in streams where no measurements are available. Flood routing techniques are utilised to estimate the stages, or rates of flow, in order to predict flood wave propagation along river reaches. Models can be developed for gauged catchments and their parameters related to physical characteristics such as slope, reach width, reach length so that the approach can be applied to ungauged catchments in the region. The objective of this study is to assess Muskingum-based methods for flow routing ill ungauged river reaches, both with and without lateral inflows. Using observed data, the model parameters were calibrated to assess performance of the Muskingum flood routing procedures and the Muskingum-Cunge method was then assessed using catchment derived parameters for use in ungauged river reaches. The Muskingum parameters were derived from empirically estimated variables and variables estimated from assumed river cross-sections within the selected river reaches used. Three sub-catchments in the Thukela catchment in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa were selected for analyses, with river lengths of 4, 21 and 54 km. The slopes of the river reaches and reach lengths were derived from a digital elevation model. Manning roughness coefficients were estimated from field observations. Flow variables such as velocity, hydraulic radius, wetted perimeters, flow depth and top flow width were determined from empirical equations and cross-sections of the selected rivers. Lateral inflows to long river reaches were estimated from the Saint-Venant equation. Observed events were extracted for each sub-catchment to assess the Muskingum-Cunge parameter estimation method and Three-parameter Muskingum method. The extracted events were further analysed using empirically estimated flow variables. The performances of the methods were evaluated by comparing both graphically and statistically the simulated and observed hydrographs. Sensitivity analyses were undertaken using three selected events and a 50% variation in selected input variables was used to identify sensitive variablesThe performance of the calibrated Muskingum-Cunge flood routing method using observed hydrographs displayed acceptable results. Therefore, the Muskingum-Cunge flood routing method was applied in ungauged catchments, with variables estimated empirically. The results obtained shows that the computed outflow hydrographs generated using the Muskingum-Cunge method, with the empirically estimated variables and variables estimated from cross-sections of the selected rivers resulted in reasonably accurate computed outflow hydrographs with respect to peak discharge, timing of peak flow and volume. From this study, it is concluded that the Muskingum-Cunge method can be applied to route floods in ungauged catchments in the Thukela catchment and it is postulated that the method can be used to route floods in other ungauged rivers in South Africa. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2005.
