Quality Control Recommendations for Structural Interventions on Historic Properties

Holland, Michele M. 29 September 2006 (has links)
This thesis presents recommendations for controlling quality in structural interventions on historic properties. Recognizing that establishing quality in the early stages of an intervention can set the standard of quality for an entire project, these recommendations are for the first phase of an intervention, the Pre-Construction Phase. To create these recommendations, first a literature review of past and present intervention methods is conducted. After breaking down the Pre-Construction Phase first into a series of steps, and then each step into a series of details, a standard of quality is established for each detail. The available methods for conducting each detail are then analyzed. Using the literature review and the established standards of quality, recommendations are made as to which method is most appropriate for a given project. These recommendations are applied to two case studies, the structural interventions of Boykin's Tavern and Fallingwater. Finally, conclusions on the use of the proposed quality control recommendations are drawn, and suggestions are given for further work in this field. / Master of Science

LEED and historic preservation : a study of USGBC’s LEED rating system for new construction and major renovations as it pertains to historic building renovations

Hamilton, Andreea Maura Monica 1973- 21 October 2014 (has links)
This thesis discusses the United States Green Building Council’s proposed changes in the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Rating System for New Construction and Major Renovations from the current 2009 version to the proposed 2012 version, as they pertain to historic building renovation projects. The comparison is aimed at determining whether the proposed changes to the rating system are becoming more favorable to historic preservation, promoting the rehabilitation and reuse of historic buildings as environmentally responsible practices. The discussion is taken a step further by proposing potential modifications and metrics that could be implemented into the LEED® Rating System in order to help advance historic preservation by recognizing the many inherent sustainable qualities of historic buildings, such as regional climate-adaptive features, durable materials and skilled craftsmanship. The upcoming renovation of Battle Hall and West Mall Building, two buildings that are part of the School of Architecture complex at the University of Texas at Austin, serves as case study of historic buildings undergoing major renovations to which both the LEED 2009 and LEED 2012 Draft Rating Systems for New Construction and Major Renovations are applied. An analysis of the results informs the comparison between the two versions of the rating system. The results of the comparison indicate that changes in the LEED® rating system for New Construction and Major Renovation from the 2009 to the 2012 version are favorable for historic preservation. The USGBC is advancing in the right direction with establishing more credits for historic preservation projects. The 2012 3rd Public Comment Draft rating system introduces the notion of “historic building” and that of “historic district” for the first time, in credits that address infill within a historic district and reuse of a historic building, with work performed in accordance with The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. This represents a step forward toward integrating historic preservation and building reuse in the vocabulary of sustainability. / text

The conservation of historic cities and architectural heritage in Brazil, with particular reference to the state of Minas Gerais and the city of Mariana

Caldeira, Altino Barbosa January 1997 (has links)
This piece of work analyses the existing condition of the Brazilian. architectural heritage, focusing especially on the historic cities. In order to make it possible, the study first of all analyses the Brazilian historical background with the purpose of establishing a relationship between the circumstances and conditions in which these cities were created. Initially, the scenery of the landscape, the geographical aspects of nature, the climate and the people who converged on this New World in South America, thus initiating the Brazilian diversity of culture and behaviour, are considered. Historical, political, social, and financial factors which were involved in the construction of these cities are also shown in order to facilitate the understanding of their character and meaning. The aim of this study is to analyse aspects of the conservation of listed buildings in these special areas known as historic cities. In order to evaluate the extent of the problem, and because the Brazilian official institution which is responsible for the care of the heritage is supported by the government, specific situations occurring in different regions will be shown. The legislation related to the protection of the listed artefacts in which are included listed buildings and also urban areas is analysed in its application and results. This study takes into account the most important concentration of historic cities in Brazil, which were constructed in the eighteenth century, in the state of Minas Gerais, and then, describes the in-depth research conducted in one of these special cities - Mariana - in order to provide data and arguments for the evaluation of the protection of the historic cities in Brazil. Looking initially at the whole of the Brazilian architectural heritage values, and then focusing on a special area in order to study and evaluate rules and schemes concerning the protection and conservation of the historic cities, this research aims to find a methodology for the restoration and conservation of those cities as a whole.

Achée, Dawn 01 May 2002 (has links)
During the spring of 2002 I completed an internship witb the Rivertown museums and attractions in Kenner, Louisiana. I spent a great deal of time with Rivertown's Director,Mrs. Barbara Morris, to get a true feel of what it takes to run such a large number of diverse facilities. The following report gives a detailed overview of this internship, including my responsibilities and outcomes of my assistance. During my internship, I gained a large amount of knowledge regarding the variety of skills needed to run a non-profit, cultural organization. In the process of learning about the general practices of Rivertown, I was also able to assist with several special projects. This report shows the detail of my learning experience at Rivertown and analyzes it in such a way as to provide the fullest educational experience possible.
